Contempt
Disrespect!
Contempt is a strong feeling of disrespect or disdain towards someone.
It can harm our mental wellness by creating negative emotions and damaging relationships.
When we hold contempt, it's like building a wall that separates us from others.
To protect our mental well-being, it's better to address conflicts with understanding and empathy, finding ways to resolve differences without resorting to contempt, which can lead to isolation and emotional distress.

Adapted from Dr. Gottmann 2000
Contempt is any statement or nonverbal behaviour that puts yourself on a higher ground than your partner.
Mocking your partner, calling them names, rolling your eyes and sneering in disgust are all examples of contempt.
Contempt is the most serious destructive style of communication.
When contempt begins to overwhelm the relationship, one person tends to forget entirely the other person's positive qualities.
The antidote to contempt is to lower your tolerance for contemputuous statements and behavipours and to actively work on building a culture of appreciation in the relationship.
Is it easy? No
Can it be done? Yes
